How a relocation chart works
A birth chart is a snapshot of the sky from one place at one moment. The planets’ positions in the zodiac come from the moment and are the same everywhere on Earth. The Ascendant, the Midheaven and the house cusps come from the place: they describe where the horizon and the meridian were pointing from that latitude and longitude.
A relocation chart keeps the moment and swaps the place. Your Sun stays at the same degree of the same sign, but it may move from the 3rd house to the 10th, and a planet that sat quietly in a cadent house may land on an angle. Those angular placements are the ones that change how a city feels. The guide to reading a relocation chart walks through each piece.
StarMapper computes the chart with Swiss Ephemeris in Placidus houses, the same method and house system as Astro.com, with the birth time zone resolved from the historical IANA database. The full approach is on the methodology page.
Common questions
What is a relocation chart?
Your birth chart recast as if you had been born in a different city. The birth moment and the planets' zodiac positions stay exactly the same; only the horizon and meridian change, so the Ascendant, Midheaven and all twelve house cusps move. It shows which areas of life a place emphasises for you.
Is the relocation chart calculator free?
Yes. Entering your birth details and a city shows your relocated Ascendant and Midheaven and a summary of what shifts, free and without an account. The house-by-house reading of every planet in that city is part of the paid Year Ahead Reading.
Do I need an exact birth time?
Ideally, yes. The angles and house cusps move about one degree every four minutes, so an exact time gives exact angles. Without one the chart is cast for noon and should be read as a sketch.
How is this different from an astrocartography map?
An astrocartography map surveys the whole planet at once by drawing your planetary lines across it. A relocation chart zooms into one city and reads it like a natal chart. Use the map to shortlist places and the relocation chart to study one in depth.
Not sure which city to ask about?
Draw your full astrocartography map first. It shows every city your lines run through, and each one opens this chart.
